This week many ‘Net Neutrality’ supporters were out in numbers protesting the notion of a corporate internet, leading many to speculate on how the battle of the ‘world wide web’ would pan out.
For those of you who aren’t yet informed on the matter I strongly encourage you to follow this link as it provides a real comprehensive look at what could happen should this occur: https://www.aclu.org/net-neutrality
Essentially, corporate telecommunications companies are hoping to utilize the internet in their favor and regulate the amount of information your computer (i.e. videos, emails, pictures, etc). That means, they can regulate the speed your router loads websites and date and encourage those of us who don’t like it, to shell out for a better service package and bleed you of your money. It’s a nice scheme for the big wigs who are getting the extra cash but a big ‘fuck you’ to the rest of us regular folks who just want to watch some of ‘The Wire’ online. What would occur should this sort of bullshit pass, is that there will be a ‘fast lane’ and a ‘slow lane’ for those who aren’t willing to fork over hundreds a month for good service. The internet will now become a luxury for the average US citizen and force many of us to give it up entirely.
Barack Obama, has yet to really take a stand on the matter as far as talking points go, but if his recent appointment of Tom Wheeler as chairman of the FCC is any indicator, than we’re all royally fucked. Keep in mind Mr. Wheeler was himself a venture capitalist and lobbyist for the cable and wireless industry, with positions including President of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA). It’s like putting an alcoholic in charge of the liquor store. Myself and many others can only hope that things go the right way and prevent this type of cronyism from happening but then again, ‘money talks’.

For those of you who haven’t yet heard Debra Harrell, who was previously arrested for allowing her nine-year old daughter to play alone at a park near her job at McDonald’s was subsequently ‘let go’ from her position this week. McDonalds refused to comment on the matter except only to say that they were in the process of cooperating with the local PD’s investigation. Nice McDonald’s…. real nice.
Never mind that Debra previously had been letting her daughter come and play on the family laptop while she was at work. Never mind that their house had also been burglarized with said laptop being stolen and thus forcing her to allow her daughter to play in a nearby park. Oh, and that she gave the nine-year old a cell phone in case of emergencies and to stay in contact. Nope, because the law is the law and ‘fuck poor people’ who are stuck working dead end $8/hr jobs to make ends meet and support single parent households. It’s the single mothers who are paying for it in the end, not to mention the children they care for, and meanwhile it’s the courts that are ruling in favor of the law to the point of insanity. Society has a real disconnect from this type of world and goes under the assumption that a parent who is at work all day to support their young children ‘doesn’t spend enough time with them’, but one that forgoes work to do just that is a welfare bum who is cheating the system. It’s really disgusting and it’s this type of animosity that the 1% instills in their supporters who wake up shivering in the night with the fear that somewhere, some unemployed ‘bum’ is making a quick buck off the system. I’m not sure when it happened but somewhere along the way, people in this country went from having the desire to ‘help to poor’ to the ‘fuck that deadbeat’ mentality.
Luckily, Debra was able to get her daughter back with the appropriate courts still looking into the incident and keeping an eye on the pair. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of McDonald’s actions, who felt it necessary to deprive an already economically stretched single mother of a steady income. Here’s hoping that something gives in this case and the Harnell’s can move past this deplorable act.
They say the definition of insanity is doing ‘the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result’. This week the sages in the GOP have successfully proven that they are in no way exceptions to the rule.
First up we have our very own installment of The Expendables, as Rick Perry and the always brainy Sean Hannity, took time out of their busy schedules to make their way down to the border and play soldier. But no such journey would be complete without a photo op and as usual the GOP delivered a very ‘meme’-able entry, with Beavis and Butthead looking very tough as they bravely stood, machine gun in tow, with such stone faced enthusiasm that would make a gun owner weep tears of patriotism. It takes a real man to take up arms as a first resort, but it takes an even bigger man to take up arms to face down hordes of immigrant children. For those of you who are convinced that the latest crisis on the border is some sort of ‘Zimmerman telegram’-esque conspiracy by the current administration, I can only direct you to the exit as this post is in no way supportive of that ‘theory’. But doesn’t Rick Perry just look as cute as a button with his new ‘smart boy’ glasses?
In other news, Sarah Palin, the GOP’s ‘princess batshit’ and tea party favorite, continued to whine about impeachment to anyone who will listen. Perhaps one of my favorite excerpts from her conspiracy theory laced tirade about the sanctity of this country discussed the shifting climate under this ‘heathen’ presidency in which she said,
Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, “no mas.”
Unfortunately, you can only cry ‘wolf’ so many times before those of us who are normally adjusted individuals just stop listening. Luckily for Sarah ‘Plain and Crazy’, there are still plenty of ‘ammosexuals’ and red blooded tea partiers who are more than willing to lap up every second she speaks. This is the one time I’m going to say this but Sarah, just take all these brilliant ideas that you have bottled up inside and write another book already. Anything to stop these nut ball talking points from making their way into the media outlets.
